The question

What is the ruling on doubts and satanic thoughts that go so far as to curse God and the Messenger, and do they indicate a lack of faith or disbelief? And what should one who experiences such thoughts do to get rid of them and become righteous?

The answer

The questioner is not an unbeliever; rather, her fear of Satan's whispers is proof of the soundness of her belief. Allah has forgiven this nation for obsessive thoughts as long as they are not acted upon or spoken. The servant's dislike of these thoughts is a sign of sound belief and strong faith, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "That is pure faith." She should seek refuge in Allah and turn her mind away from these whispers. If Satan reaches the point of saying, "Who created your Lord?" she should seek refuge in Allah and stop. Among the things that will help her on the path of guidance are associating with righteous women, occupying her time with acts of obedience, and memorizing the Quran. For there are two blessings in which many people are deceived: health and free time.
