In verse 109 of Surat al-Baqarah, Allah Almighty explains that the People of the Book wish for Muslims to apostatize out of envy. Nevertheless, He commanded Muslims to pardon and overlook their actions until Allah’s command should come. Allah’s command later came for fighting them, as interpreted by Ibn Abbas, Qatadah, and Al-Rabi‘. Al-Tabari and Ibn Al-Jawzi explain that “until Allah brings His command” means until His command for fighting comes, and this command was revealed in the Jizyah verse and manifested in the events of Banu al-Nadir and Qurayzah.
