What is the meaning of the words "yastaʿtibū" (يستعتبوا) and "al-taqwā" (التقوى) in the noble verses: (And if they ask for favor, they will not be favored) and (And He made them adhere to the word of righteousness, and they were more deserving of it and fitting for it)?

The meaning of (يَسْتَعْتِبُوا - they ask for appeasement) in the verse is that they will not be excused on the Day of Judgment if they ask to present an excuse, nor will Allah forgive their missteps. Ibn Jarir said: " (وَإِنْ يَسْتَعْتِبُوا - And if they ask for appeasement) means: if they ask for return to the worldly life, there will be no answer for them." As for (كلمة التَّقْوَى - the word of piety) in the mentioned verse, the majority opinion is that it is (لا إله إلا الله - There is no god but Allah).
