What is the ruling on female circumcision?

The 'fitra' consists of five things, among them circumcision. Scholars have interpreted it as a 'Sunnah' (prophetic tradition). It is obligatory for men and an honor for women according to many jurists. Some have even gone so far as to say it is obligatory for both men and women. Imam Malik emphasized its importance, while Abu Hanifa and Al-Hasan considered it a Sunnah. Circumcision benefits men health-wise, and it is in compliance with the command of the Prophet, peace be upon him, and the Sunnah of Abraham, peace be upon him.
