Is it permissible to slaughter a buffalo calf, less than six months old, for the 'Aqiqah?

The majority of jurists hold that the conditions for aqiqah are the same as those for udhiyah (sacrificial offering), regarding age and freedom from defects. Thus, it is permissible to sacrifice camels, cattle, and sheep from livestock. The Shafi'is are of the view that the minimum acceptable for it is a full sheep, or one-seventh of a camel or a cow. Whereas the Malikis and Hanbalis believe that nothing less than a full camel or a full cow is acceptable. The ruling for aqiqah is considered similar to the ruling for udhiyah concerning the age of the sacrificed animal. For sheep, a jadh'a (six-month-old lamb) is acceptable, and for goats, a thani (one-year-old goat) is acceptable. For cattle and buffalo, a thani (two years old and entered its third) is acceptable.
