The answer

Savings from salary, known as "benefited money," are not subject to zakat when the original sum's hawl (lunar year) is due, if these savings alone do not reach the nisab (minimum threshold). Instead, a new hawl begins for these savings. It is permissible to pay zakat in advance of its due date and to pay it in monthly installments. However, it is not permissible to delay it after it becomes obligatory. It is permissible to give zakat to poor or needy relatives, provided that their maintenance is not obligatory upon the zakat payer, such as parents, wife, and children. Giving it to kin is more meritorious.
