What is the ruling on supplicating and fasting for someone whose prayers are not accepted for forty days because of his visit to soothsayers?
We have previously explained the prohibition of astrology and divination, and the obligation to advise those who engage in them by clarifying the ruling of the Shari'ah (Islamic law) that they can neither benefit nor harm except by Allah's permission. If someone repents from these actions, Allah accepts their repentance. It is permissible to supplicate for guidance and the acceptance of good deeds for one who visited a fortune-teller or diviner, for the non-acceptance of their prayer for a specific period does not preclude supplicating for them, as the hadiths of warning may be for deterrence and intimidation. As for the impermissibility of supplication, that applies to the disbeliever who died upon their disbelief. Regarding the offering of the reward of fasting to another person, scholars have differed on this. As for the acceptance of the acts of worship (such as supplication, fasting, and others) from one who visited astrologers, acceptance is a matter of the unseen, and what is obligatory upon a Muslim is to perform their religious duties with sincerity.
