Is it permissible to accept a suitor who works in the trade of cats as a husband for one's daughter, and is his money and work unlawful (haram)?

The preponderant view is the prohibition of selling cats, based on a hadith (definition) in Sahih (definition) Muslim, while the majority of scholars hold the permissibility of it. Ibn al-Qayyim definitively stated its prohibition, and this is the view of Tawus, Mujahid, all the Ahl al-Dhahir (literalists), and one of the two narrations from Ahmad. A person should abandon trading in cats according to the preponderant view. However, if one imitates (follows) those who permitted it, there is no blame upon him, as this issue is among the matters of khilaf (definition) (difference of opinion) where no one is censured for holding an opposing view. We advise clarifying the Sunnah (definition) of the Prophet (peace be upon him) which indicates the impermissibility of selling cats. If the suitor does not desist, interpreting the view of the majority, then there is no harm in accepting him as a husband.
