Is it permissible to perform ruqyah on the heart by placing one's hand on it and reciting the Qur’an, in order to treat hardness of the heart resulting from bad habits?
The Holy Qur’an is a healing and a mercy for believers, as stated in His Almighty's saying: "And We send down of the Qur’an that which is a healing and a mercy for believers" and "a healing for what is in the chests." The Prophet (peace be upon him) treated with the Qur’an; he would recite the Mu'awwidhat (chapters of refuge) upon himself and blow, and recite upon his family when they were ill. There is no harm in reciting the Qur’an and asking Allah through it, but one must be careful not to recite the Qur’an to ask people through it. For treating hardness of the heart, Ibn al-Qayyim mentions four matters: the Holy Qur’an, faith and righteous deeds, avoiding sins, and repentance and seeking forgiveness.
