Is memorizing texts sufficient for a student of knowledge to become proficient in religious sciences?

Memorizing the foundational texts (mutūn) is very important for seeking knowledge. It is for this reason that it was said: "So memorize, for every memorizer is an imam," and "Whoever memorizes the foundational texts masters the disciplines." However, memorization alone is not enough; rather, it is necessary to understand these texts and to examine their commentaries, as a memorizer might not be a jurist in what he memorizes, in fulfillment of the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "Perhaps a bearer of fiqh is not a jurist."
