What is the ruling on a man divorcing his wife with three pronouncements of divorce under the aforementioned circumstances, knowing that he divorced her with the third pronouncement while she was in a state of purity during which he had intercourse with her?

If the husband is certain or strongly presumes that his wife will carry out her threat to kill herself, then his divorce is not effective and is considered a divorce by compulsion, which does not take effect. The divorce of an angry person does not take effect if he does not comprehend what he is saying. If he comprehends what he is saying, then his divorce is effective. If the husband divorced his wife twice while not comprehending what he was saying due to extreme anger, then nothing is incumbent upon him. However, if he comprehended what he was saying in one of the two divorces, then one divorce is incumbent upon him. If he pronounced both divorces while comprehending what he was saying, then two divorces are incumbent upon him. In the event of one or two divorces taking place, the husband may reconcile with his wife if the total number of divorces has not reached three. It is not permissible for either spouse to harm the other through beating, cursing, or insulting. However, it is permissible to strike the wife for discipline if preaching and abstention in bed have not been effective, provided that the striking is light, does not break a bone, and does not disfigure a limb. Divorce becomes effective and binding if it occurs during a period of purity in which intercourse took place, according to the majority of scholars. Sheikh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah and those who agreed with him said: It does not take effect because it is an innovated and forbidden divorce.
