What is the ruling on orthodontic treatment if it is solely for cosmetic purposes and not to correct a defect?

It is not permissible to wear dental braces unless it is to remove a clear defect or disfigurement that affects the alignment of the teeth by causing spacing or crowding. This is because it is considered an alteration of Allah's creation and a "tafalluj" (filing teeth for beauty), which is forbidden and is from the work of Satan. If its purpose is for fashion and does not affect the alignment of the mouth, but an unrelated male doctor performs it, or if it involves extravagance, or leads to mispronunciation in prayer, then it is prohibited. If it is free from these prohibitions, it is better not to wear them due to lack of need and because it might entice foolish and ignorant people. It should not be worn except out of necessity for a clear dental disfigurement.
