Is it permissible for a wife to leave her righteous husband, who prays sometimes and has an aversion to religiosity, and return to her country to preserve the religion of her children?
It is advised to strive diligently in raising children upon religion and good morals, and to be patient with the husband while frequently supplicating for his guidance. It is also advised to strive diligently in reforming the husband and helping him to repent and become upright, by reminding him of Allah and the Last Day, and by encouraging him to associate with righteous people and to maintain the five daily prayers in congregation, for Allah Almighty says: "And establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater. And Allah knows that which you do." If the husband does not become upright, the wife should weigh between staying with him or separating from him, and choose the lesser of the two harms.
