The question

Is loving Ali ibn Abi Talib and the Family of the Prophet (Ahl al-Bayt) obligatory for every Muslim, and is hating Omar ibn al-Khattab and the Companions not considered forbidden, nor does it take one out of the fold of faith, like loving Ali ibn Abi Talib?

The answer

A Muslim must love Ali ibn Abi Talib because he is from thehl al-Bayt (household) of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, whom Allah commanded us to love. Likewise, it is obligatory to love Umar ibn al-Khattab, believe in his فضl (virtue), and be pleased with him, for he is one of the foremost early Muslims whom Allah was pleased with. It is also obligatory to love all the Companions and seek forgiveness for them, and whoever curses them is not a Muslim.
