The answer

The pronouncements of divorce are of two types: explicit and implicit. Explicit pronouncements are the word "divorce" and its derivations (excluding the imperative and present tenses). Divorce occurs with these pronouncements, whether uttered seriously or in jest, even if the husband did not intend it. Implicit pronouncements are any words that indicate separation and divorce and convey its meaning. Divorce does not occur with these unless there is an intention to divorce, because they are not explicit and are open to interpretation. If the husband did not intend divorce with these non-explicit words, then it does not occur. Informing one's wife falsely that he has divorced her does not effect a divorce, religiously, according to the preponderant opinion. The husband must beware of pronouncements of divorce and resolve his problems far from them, because marriage is a great ritual and should not be exposed to anything that weakens it; rather, it should be strengthened. Allah Almighty said: "And how could you take it while you have gone into each other and they have taken from you a solemn covenant?" [An-Nisa: 21]. And He, glory be to Him, said: "And do not take the verses of Allah in jest" [Al-Baqarah: 231].
