The answer

The meaning of "neck" (رقبة) is the freeing of an enslaved person (عبد رقيق), which is legislated in expiations for killing, Dhihar (a form of divorce), and oaths. Ahadith have been reported clarifying the virtue of freeing necks, for whoever frees a Muslim neck, Allah will free every limb of that person from the Fire for every limb of the freed person. And whoever frees two necks, they will be his redemption from the Fire. It has also been reported that whoever frees a neck on behalf of a deceased person, the reward reaches the deceased, if the deceased was a Muslim. In the absence of enslaved people today, what benefits the deceased are supplications for him, charity, Hajj, and performed on his behalf.
