Does a divorce issued by the husband with the words to his wife: "You are thrice divorced, thrice divorced, thrice divorced" following an argument with his son and the wife's intervention to resolve the dispute, take effect, knowing that he had repeated the word divorce on previous occasions out of idle talk?

If a man utters a divorce statement while unconscious, it does not take effect. However, if he is conscious, his divorce is valid. Divorce pronounced with the triple talaq takes effect as three divorces according to the majority of scholars, whereas Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah holds that it counts as one. If a husband pronounces a clear divorce statement, intentionally and consciously, his divorce is valid even if he did not intend it or was joking. It is advisable to present the matter to trustworthy scholars.
