The question

What should a girl do who has been engaged for four months to a man she has known for four years, and she feels fear, insecurity, and instability with him, and regrets her obedience to him in disobedience to her Lord, and describes him as moody, selfish, contradictory, caring for no one but himself, whose religiosity is wavering, and who wants to abolish her personality and ambitions?

The answer

If a man possessing some blameworthy characteristics proposes to a woman, it is not advisable to marry him, and it is better to annul the engagement, as marrying him may lead to divorce. It is permissible to annul the engagement if the need arises.

The woman should not rush into accepting the suitor before inquiring about him from trustworthy individuals who know his situation, in addition to performing Istikhara (prayer for guidance), because married life is a long journey that requires good selection.

It must be noted that the engaged man and woman are strangers to each other until the legal marriage contract is concluded. Therefore, they must adhere to the Islamic legal rulings in their interactions. It is not permissible for the suitor to talk to the fiancée or contact her except to the extent permitted by Islamic law. Telephone calls between them are often not free from desire or enjoyment, and these are not permissible for him before the contract.
