The answer

The husband must balance honoring his parents with treating his wife kindly. It is not permissible for him to oppress his wife to please his family. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, warned against oppressing women, saying: «O Allah, I declare inviolable the rights of the two weak ones: the orphan and the woman.» It is the wife's right to have an independent dwelling, and she is not obliged to serve her husband's family or live with them in a shared-facility house.

Obedience to parents is obligatory as long as it does not contravene Islamic law and does not harm the child. It is considered disobedience to Allah Almighty for them to command something that involves injustice or the violation of a rightful obligation owed to another party.

The wife should discuss with her husband and explain to him the obligation of kind treatment, the prohibition of oppression, and her right to an independent dwelling. If he does not respond and insists on her living with his family, and if this causes her harm, then obedience to him is not obligatory. She should exercise wisdom and patience, and sensible people can be brought in to mediate reconciliation between them. If that fails, she has the right to take the matter to the Sharia court.
