Is what happened to me destiny and divine decree, and a delay in sustenance, or was it by my choice?
What happened was by divine decree and destiny, and at the same time, it was by the choice of its doer. The servant possesses a choice that validates his accountability and recompense, yet it does not transcend Allah's decree and destiny. The inquirer should focus on the present and not dwell on the past, and reflect upon the words of Allah Almighty: (No disaster strikes upon the earth or among yourselves except that it is in a register before We bring it into being—indeed that, for Allah, is easy— In order that you not grieve over what has eluded you nor exult in what He has given you. And Allah does not like every self-deluded exultant). And he should act upon the Prophet's (peace be upon him) advice: "And if something befalls you, do not say, 'If only I had done such and such, it would have been such and such,' but rather say, 'Allah has decreed and what He willed He has done,' for 'if only' opens the door to the work of Satan."
