Does the Udhiyah become obligatory, and is it impermissible for the one offering the sacrifice to eat from it if a man says: "This cow is my Udhiyah for this year"?

If a man designates his sacrificial animal with the words, "This is my Udhiyah (definition)," it becomes obligatory and may not be sold or given away. The jurists agree that it is recommended to eat from a voluntary Udhiyah. However, regarding the Udhiyah made obligatory by designation or vow, the jurists differ on the ruling of eating from it. The Malikis and Hanbalis permit eating from it, while the Shafi'is and some Hanbalis do not permit eating from it. Another view among the Shafi'is allows eating from it if it became obligatory through an absolute vow. According to the Hanafis, it is permissible by consensus to eat from it, whether it is voluntary, obligatory, or vowed. The more cautious approach is to refrain from eating from an Udhiyah made obligatory by a vow or designation.
