What is the ruling on performing a fard prayer, such as Asr, behind a coffin in the mosque, in preparation for the funeral prayer?

Scholars differed regarding praying over a deceased person in a mosque, and the most preponderant opinion is permissibility. As for praying towards a deceased person placed in the direction of the Qibla, it is valid due to the absence of prohibitive evidence, because a believer does not become impure, neither alive nor dead. Also, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to pray while Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, was lying across in front of him, similar to how a deceased person might be positioned. However, some jurists explicitly stated that it is disliked to pray towards a dead person or someone speaking, out of fear that the worshipper might be distracted by them. Therefore, the deceased should be placed behind the rows.
