The question

How can one get rid of negative thoughts and recurring whispers that lead to detesting prayer and doubting religion, and a constant feeling of distress and a desire to end life, along with a deterioration in psychological and physical well-being, despite attempts to adhere to remembrance (dhikr) and a love for listening to the Qur’an without being able to recite it well?

The answer

It is advisable to disregard intrusive thoughts (waswās) and to fortify oneself by consistently reciting the prescribed adhkar (remembrances) and ta'awwudhat (seeking refuge in Allah), and by performing shar'iyyah (Islamic exorcism). This is permissible for those afflicted, those suspected of being afflicted, and those not afflicted, to ward off harm. It is also recommended to consistently recite the supplication for distress: "O Allah, I hope for Your mercy, so do not abandon me to myself for the blink of an eye, and correct for me all my affairs; there is no god but You." Additionally, frequently recite the supplication of Yunus (peace be upon him) and the Greatest Name (al-Ism al-A'dham).
