What is the ruling on one who spreads rumors or errors that harm others, using twisted words that cannot be pinned on him?

Slandering and backbiting (al-hamz wa al-lamz) are a type of forbidden backbiting, whether by word or deed, explicitly, implicitly, or by gesture, as long as the prohibited meaning is understood. If this action leads to corrupting relations between people, then it is a prohibited tale-bearing (namima) by the Qur'an, Sunnah, and scholarly consensus. This behavior harms Muslims and is among the forbidden acts, as Allah the Almighty says: ﴿And those who harm believing men and believing women for [something] other than what they have earned have certainly borne slander and manifest sin.﴾ [Al-Ahzab: 58], and as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Do not harm Muslims, nor shame them, nor seek out their faults," and "A Muslim is he from whose tongue and hand the Muslims are safe."
