The question

What should I do about my family's insistence that my husband be accompanied on his travels or that he should not go, given that I know he cannot take me with him and he refuses to stay, and I fear wronging him or wronging myself by staying with him?

The answer

It is the wife's right upon her husband that he not be absent from her for more than six months without an excuse. If she is content with his absence, then her family has no right to object. But if she is harmed by his absence and fears temptation, then she has the right to ask him to return or to move with him. Otherwise, seeking a divorce is not a sin. Suicide is one of the gravest major sins. A believer does not despair of Allah's mercy and must fear Allah, entrust his affairs to Him, and beware of the whisperings of Satan.
