What is the ruling on praying in front of hung pictures, or illustrated books and magazines, or carved and three-dimensional images?

It is not permissible to hang photographic images of living beings on the wall, and it is disliked for a worshipper to pray when such images are in front of him, especially if they are forbidden pictures or sculptures. As for images found in books and magazines, there is no disliking in them if they are not hung or exposed in front of the worshipper. However, the disliking of having images in the house without need remains. Similarly, dolls should not be left in front of the worshipper as they might distract him from prayer. The jurists have agreed upon the disliking of praying towards anything that distracts the heart from devotion, especially if the forbidden image is in the direction of prayer (qiblah), as this resembles the prostration of disbelievers to their idols.
