The question

How do we reconcile the Prophet's (peace be upon him) prohibition of the price of a cat with the fact that Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) owned a cat and was named after it?

The answer

There is no connection between selling a cat and owning one. Owning a cat is permissible without any problem, and this is indicated by the Hadith of Kabsha bint Ka'b ibn Malik from Abu Qatadah, in which the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said about the cat: "It is not impure; it is one of those that circulate among you."

Once it is clear that owning a cat is permissible, there is no blame in that upon the great Companion Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him.
