Is it Sunnah to fast on the occasion of the Prophet's birthday (Mawlid) following the example of the Prophet (peace be upon him) who fasted on the day of his birth?

It is not established that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was asked about the date of his birth, or that he was born on the twelfth of Rabi' al-Awwal. Rather, it is established that he said concerning fasting on Monday: "On it I was born, and on it revelation descended upon me," and "Deeds are presented on Mondays and Thursdays, so I love that my deeds be presented while I am fasting." Therefore, it is sunnah to fast on Monday, and it is not permissible to apply the analogy of a person's birthday to it, for celebrating the Mawlid is an innovation (bid'ah).
