What is the prayer prescribed for a Muslim in a state of distress?

There is no obligatory prayer specifically prescribed for distress, but Allah has encouraged us to seek help through prayer during hardship, as prayer connects the believer to his Lord and grants him tranquility. When the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was afflicted by a matter, he would hasten to prayer. Some scholars have inferred from this hadith (definition) the desirability of performing two rak'ahs for a calamity (salat al-nazilah), and Ibn Abbas did so upon receiving news of his brother's death. Through prayer, we derive steadfastness and balance from Allah. Among what the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, taught us to say during distress is the supplication: "There is no god but Allah, the All-Mighty, the Forbearing. There is no god but Allah, the Lord of the Magnificent Throne. There is no god but Allah, the Lord of the seven heavens, and the Lord of the earth, and the Lord of the Noble Throne."
