The question

Is a person who committed sodomy for many years, then repented and became steadfast in prayer, considered a disbeliever and a hypocrite? And are their deeds invalidated due to the devil's whispers that make them doubt the acceptance of their repentance, or doubt their faith, the Qur'an, and the prophets? And how can one get rid of these whispers?

The answer

Praise be to Allah, who has guided you. The whispers (waswas) you experience are proof of your faith. Some companions of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "Indeed, we find in ourselves that which is too great for any of us to speak of." He said: "Have you found it?" They said: "Yes." He said: "That is pure faith." In other narrations: "Praise be to Allah who reduced his (Satan's) cunning to mere whispers." This is praise from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, for one whose state is such, because it is proof that Satan has despaired of misleading him. What is obligatory for a person is to say: "I believe in Allah and His Messenger," and to repel those thoughts.
