The question

Is it permissible to perform tayammum and prayer with two strikes: the first for the face, and the second for the hands up to the elbows, as is the Madhhab of the Hanafis? And has any authentic hadith been reported with this method?

The answer

It is permissible to perform tayammum with two strikes: the first for the face, and the second for the hands up to the elbows. Whoever prays with this tayammum, their prayer is valid. This is the view of the Hanafis and the Shafi'is. Whereas the Malikis and Hanbalis hold that what is obligatory is one strike for the face and hands up to the wrists. There are narrations, both Marfu' (attributed to the Prophet) and Mawquf (attributed to a companion), about tayammum with two strikes, but none of them are authentic except the hadith of Abu Jahim and Ammar, which indicates tayammum with one strike for the face and palms.
