The question

What is the problem with interpreting or not interpreting some attributes, such as the attribute of descent (nuzool), while not denying it? And what harm is there in believing that Allah descends in a manner befitting His majesty, or that an angel descends by His command, or that His mercy descends, so long as the ultimate goal is diligence in worship?

The answer

To say that Allah Almighty's "mercy descends" or "an angel descends by His command" instead of affirming the attribute of descent for Allah is a deviation from the apparent meaning of the text without proof and a distortion of the meaning of the Lawgiver's words. It is necessary to follow the understanding of the Salaf (pious predecessors) and to believe what the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, reported about Allah's attributes, because he is the most knowledgeable of creation concerning Allah. The Salaf and the majority of scholars have unanimously affirmed what is mentioned in the revelation texts regarding Allah's attributes, while negating any resemblance, based on His saying, the Almighty: "There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing." Imam Al-Shafi'i said that Allah Almighty is on His Throne, draws near to His creation, and descends to the lowest heaven as He wills. Ibn Taymiyyah mentioned that the methodology of the Salaf is to describe Allah with what He described Himself or what His Messenger described Him with, without distortion, negation, asking how, or resemblance, emphasizing that he did not find any interpretation from the Companions for the verses of attributes that contradicts their understood meaning.
