Is my divorcing my wife—with whom I feel neither love nor happiness—after having promised marriage to another, considered displeasing to God, knowing that I will leave her my apartment and son, and give her half of my salary?

The answer

Divorce is permissible when needed, such as due to a wife's bad character, but do not rush to divorce your wife. If you need to marry, there is no objection to marrying another, provided you are just. Upholding the limits of Allah and lowering the gaze from what is forbidden are among the most important reasons for a husband's contentment with his wife, while unrestrained gazing makes him feel disinclined towards her. Live with your wife in kindness, be patient, and overlook mistakes. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "A believing man should not hate a believing woman; if he dislikes one of her characteristics, he will be pleased with another." Feelings of love are not a prerequisite for the stability of married life, for Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, said: "Not all homes are built on love, but rather on companionship based on lineage and Islam." A man may see a woman and imagine that she is better than his wife, but if he marries her, he discovers her flaws and becomes bored, and this may lead to losing more than what he gained.
