What is the ruling of Islamic law regarding a husband remaining with his wife who utters obscene language, physically assaults him, abandons him, neglects her household duties, and does not pray?
If the wife is impious by abandoning prayer and is ill-mannered, she needs gentle admonition and guidance, even by bringing tapes and booklets about the importance of prayer and the husband's rights. If she straightens up, that is good. But if she insists on abandoning prayer and ill-treatment, then she is an evil woman whose separation is desirable, and it is permissible to restrict her so that she requests a divorce in exchange for financial compensation. Ibn Qudamah stated that divorce is permissible when there is a need due to the wife's bad character and ill-treatment, and it is recommended when she neglects her obligatory duties to Allah, such as prayer. In this case, there is no harm in restricting her so that she may ransom herself from him.
