The answer

First: Citing two hadiths: 1. The hadith of Umar -may Allah be pleased with him-: "Isbal (letting one's garment hang below the ankles) is in the izar (lower garment), the qamis (shirt), and the turban. And whoever drags anything out of arrogance, Allah will not look at him on the Day of Resurrection." 2. The hadith of Abu Hurairah -may Allah be pleased with him-: A man was praying with his izar hanging below his ankles, so the Prophet -peace and blessings be upon him- commanded him to perform ablution and said: "Indeed, Allah does not accept the prayer of a man who lets his garment hang below his ankles." - It was pointed out that the chain of narration for the second hadith is authentic according to Al-Nawawi and Ibn Muflih, despite some discussion regarding Yahya ibn Abi Kathir and Abu Ja'far.

Second: Clarifying that anything from clothing (shirt, izar, trousers, pants) that extends below the ankles is part of the forbidden isbal, citing the hadith: "Whatever is below the ankles of the izar is in the Fire," and the hadith: "The izar of the believer is to mid-shin, and there is no harm in what is between that and the ankles. Whatever is below the ankles is in the Fire."

Third: Some scholars explained the Prophet's command to the man who let his garment hang below his ankles to perform ablution - assuming the hadith is authentic - by saying that ablution is an expiation for sins, and that the non-acceptance of the prayer of the one who lets his garment hang below his ankles does not mean its invalidity, but rather that its non-acceptance means that his sins are not expiated or his heart is not purified from iniquities, even if the prayer itself fulfills the obligation.
