What is the ruling on delaying the repayment of debt for one who is well-off? Is the debtor sinful for shunning his brother who demands his debt from him? And is it a religious obligation to return money that was not agreed upon to be returned from the outset?

The debtor is not permitted to spend on non-essential matters if it affects their ability to repay their debts, because "the procrastination of the rich is injustice," and they are not permitted to harm the creditor verbally or physically. We advise kindness, respecting the elder brother, being good to him, rewarding his good deeds, and rejecting estrangement, for Allah Almighty says: "And not equal are the good deed and the bad. Repel [evil] by that which is better" (41:34). And remember: "If you are as you say, then you are feeding them hot ashes, and you will continue to have a helper from Allah against them as long as you remain in that state," and "The one who maintains ties of kinship is not the one who merely reciprocates, but the one who maintains ties when they are cut off," and "Allah does not increase a servant who pardons except in honor, and no one humbles himself for Allah except that Allah raises him," and "He is not one of us who does not show mercy to our young and respect our elders."
