What is the reason that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him, prayed over the martyrs of Uhud, even though a martyr is not prayed over?

Scholars have differed regarding the ruling on praying over a martyr of battle. The Hanafis and some scholars have affirmed its permissibility, citing the hadith of the Prophet's prayer over the martyrs of Uhud.

Conversely, the majority of scholars held the view that praying over a martyr is not permissible. They responded to the Uhud hadith by explaining that the prayer was in the sense of supplication (du'a), or that it was specific to the martyrs of Uhud, or that it was one of the Prophet's unique characteristics. Ibn al-Qayyim held that the matter involves a choice between praying over them or not, while affirming that the martyr should not be washed.
