Is the story true that Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) wept out of fear of falling from the Sirat (bridge over Hell) on the Day of Judgment?

Ibn Sa’d, Al-Bukhari, and others narrated it from Abdullah ibn Al-Mubarak, from Abd Al-Wahhab ibn Ward, from Salam ibn Bashir ibn Jahal, that Abu Hurairah wept during his illness, saying: "I do not weep for your world, but I weep for the long journey ahead of me and the scarcity of my provisions. I have reached an ascent leading to a descent, towards either Paradise or Hellfire, and I do not know which of the two paths I will be taken."

The narrators in its chain are trustworthy, but Salam ibn Bashir did not meet Abu Hurairah, so the chain is broken (disconnected). Ibn Hibban said: Salam ibn Bashir narrates from Abu Hurairah, but he did not see him; there is Ikrimah between them. If the intermediary is Ikrimah, then he is trustworthy, and the chain is sound. However, it is possible that the intermediary is another unknown person.

In any case, this narration falls under the categories of biographies and virtues, so there is leniency in its transmission and circulation.
