How is the sin of backbiting forgiven for a deceased person?

Backbiting is a grave sin that Allah has forbidden. He described the backbiter as one who devours the flesh of his dead brother. It is obligatory to seek forgiveness from the one backbited, if he is alive. Otherwise, one should supplicate for him and mention his good qualities in the same places where he was backbited.
