What is the recommended amount of charity to give from one's salary, and what is the obligatory amount to be given from it?

A Muslim must first fulfill the obligatory expenses for those under their care. After that, they are free to spend from their wealth in ways that please Allah the Almighty, for He says: "And spend from that which He has made you successors over," and "And whatever good you spend, it will be fully repaid to you, and you will not be wronged," and "Never will you attain righteousness until you spend from that which you love." Allah the Almighty also promised recompense to those who spend, saying: "And whatever thing you spend [in His cause] - He will compensate it; and He is the best of providers." The Prophet, peace be upon him, encouraged spending, saying: "O Allah, grant recompense to one who spends," and "Whoever gives charity equal to a date from good earnings... Allah nurtures it for its owner until it becomes like a mountain." The Sharia (definition) has not specified an amount for charity; the more a Muslim spends, the greater their reward will be.
