Is it permissible to eat chicken that has been stunned by electricity before slaughter, when there is no certainty of its death prior to slaughter?

One must investigate before eating chicken to ensure it was alive at the time of slaughter; otherwise, it is impermissible to eat. The basic principle concerning slaughtered animals is prohibition until their permissibility is known through a lawful slaughter (dhakāt shar‘īyah) performed by a Muslim or a person of the Book. Meat about which there are strong doubts regarding its not being slaughtered lawfully is forbidden to consume. The European Council for Fatwa and Research has ruled that it is impermissible to consume ready-made poultry meats due to their non-compliance with Islamic law.
