What is the view of the senior Hanafi scholars regarding Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah?
Hanafi scholars are divided into two categories regarding their stance on Ibn Taymiyyah:
The first category: Those who are fanatically devoted to the Maturidiyyah or Sufism, who were hostile towards Ibn Taymiyyah, and their words hold no value among the people of Fiqh (jurisprudence); because people of knowledge do not accept the statement of one about another except with clear proof, and these individuals have no proof. In case of dispute, the matter must be referred to Allah and His Messenger, as in His (Allah’s) saying: (And if you disagree over anything, refer it to Allah and the Messenger).
The second category: The people of knowledge and fairness, who acknowledged Ibn Taymiyyah's virtue and knowledge. Among them are:
1. Shams al-Din ibn al-Hariri al-Hanafi: He said, "If Ibn Taymiyyah is not Sheikh al-Islam, then who is?" 2. Badr al-Din al-Ayni al-Hanafi: He described Ibn Taymiyyah as an Imam and a great scholar in the book "Aqd al-Juman," and praised the book "Al-Radd al-Wafir," which defended Ibn Taymiyyah, considering him among the great virtuous people and defenders of the religion. He quoted from him in his books, such as "Al-Binayah Sharh al-Hidayah" and "Umdat al-Qari." 3. Mulla Ali al-Qari al-Hanafi: He defended Ibn Taymiyyah and Ibn al-Qayyim, considering them among the greatest figures of Ahl al-Sunnah wal Jama'ah and the Awliya' (saints/devout ones). 4. Al-Murtada al-Zabidi al-Hanafi: He quoted from Ibn Taymiyyah in his books and described him as a great scholar and Sheikh al-Islam. 5. The scholar Ibn Abidin al-Hanafi: He described Ibn Taymiyyah as a حافظ (Hafiz – memorizer of Hadith) and Sheikh al-Islam in "Radd al-Muhtar," and relied on him in formulating the Hanafi view, describing him as "reliable."
