The answer

The signs of a good ending (husn al-khatimah) appear in a servant's life through their righteousness and devotion to Allah. After death, one may find solace in certain signs such as the radiance of their face, people's good praise, and their supplications for them. The causes of a good ending are steadfastness in obedience, having a good opinion of Allah, and repentance.

As for the signs of a bad ending (su' al-khatimah), they include having a bad opinion of Allah, dying while committing a sin, not being granted the opportunity to repent, the appearance of negative signs on the face, and a dislike of death. The causes of a bad ending are persistence in sins, corrupt belief, attachment to worldly life, and keeping bad company.

A bad ending does not befall someone who is outwardly and inwardly upright. Rather, it afflicts those whose intellect has corrupted and who persist in major sins until death overtakes them before they repent.
