The answer

The Shariah has forbidden turning away from one another (tadabur) and abandonment (hajran). According to the majority of scholars, merely exchanging greetings removes the state of abandonment. However, Ahmad differed, stating that abandonment is not removed unless the relationship returns to its previous state, or if the cessation of speech causes harm to the person; in such cases, greeting alone does not end the abandonment. If associating with the woman causes harm to one's religion or worldly affairs, there is no sin in abandoning her, for a beautiful severance is better than harmful association. However, if there is no harm, then it is preferable to maintain good companionship with her, even if it is out of courtesy.
