Is the wife sinful for not informing her husband of her move from his abandoned family home to her family's home?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The wife must obey her husband and stay in his house, not leaving it except with his permission, even if it is to visit her family. This is by agreement of the imams.

It is among the wife's rights that her husband provide her with a suitable dwelling that is not desolate. If it is desolate, he must remove the harm by providing a companion or moving her to a safe dwelling.

If requesting a companion or moving to another house would lead to a greater harm, then the wife may remove the harm of desolation herself without her husband's permission, such as residing in her parents' house, provided there is a genuine harm or desolation, and not merely for increased companionship.

Both spouses must strive to solve the problem. Either the husband should house her in a safe place, or permit her to reside with her family, or bring a mahram to keep her company.
