The answer

It is permissible to break the fast while traveling if the distance reaches that which permits shortening prayers. The missed days must be made up without expiation, based on the Almighty's saying: ﴿[Fasting for] a limited number of days. So whoever among you is ill or on a journey [during them] then [he must fast] an equal number of days from other days.﴾ [Al-Baqarah:184].
