Adultery is one of the most heinous sins and greatest major transgressions, especially if committed by a married person, and its punishment is stoning to death. One must hasten to repent by abandoning the sin, regretting it, and resolving not to return to it, while maintaining discretion. One must also sever ties with the woman and neither promise her marriage nor incite her to divorce, as that constitutes unlawful incitement (takhbib).
