Is it permissible for a traveler who does not know the duration of his stay, and who was compelled by financial need to remain in a country other than his own, with the firm intention of returning to it, to combine and shorten prayers, especially if his work does not always allow him to pray on time?

Scholars differ on the duration that terminates the ruling of travel. Some prefer the view that a traveler remains a traveler as long as he does not intend absolute residency or permanent settlement. Therefore, residency restricted by work or time does not end the ruling of travel.

Accordingly, whoever intends to reside for four days or more does not shorten the prayer.
