Is it permissible to convert land designated for a mosque into a school?

If a man grants a piece of land for a mosque to be built upon it, then it belongs to the mosque, and he is not permitted to retract his grant. However, if what he issued was merely a promise to grant the land, it is preferable for him to fulfill his promise.
