Is it permissible for a woman to divorce her husband if she cannot bear to live with him due to his betrayal and lies?
Divorce is in the hands of the man, and a woman has no choice in it after a marriage has been validly concluded. A man's authority to divorce is not removed merely by his lying, betrayal, or committing non-disqualifying sins. A Muslim woman must accept Allah's decree, and "It is not for a believing man or a believing woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decided a matter, that they should have [any] choice in their decision." A woman is not permitted to divorce herself or to seek divorce unless the man is negligent in her obligatory rights or if she is harmed by remaining under his marital bond. In this case, she is permitted to seek divorce, and if he refuses, she may refer her case to the Muslim community or to Sharia courts. However, the decision to separate or seek khul' without referring to them is not permissible.
